Perspective by Jack Kelley

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was such peace and harmony in The Garden. Every need was met, every desire of the heart fulfilled. Scholars speculate on the length of time Adam and Eve enjoyed Life in the Garden, but no one really knows. I believe it was long enough to give them a very clear perspective on the differences they experienced after the fall. Life in the Garden is so deeply imprinted in the memory of man that it's been the stuff of mythology and the subject of books ever since. Sir Thomas More's book "Utopia" is just one example, although perhaps the most famous.

Whose Decision Was It?

What took Adam and Eve out of the Garden? Nothing more than the substitution of their own will for God's. He had given them everything, including the freedom from worry. He had accepted full responsibility for their well being, providing for and sustaining them, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

When they began making decisions for themselves He let them, but He also let them share some of the responsibility for their decisions. This shared responsibility brought them feelings unknown in the creation until then. The Hebrew word describing these feelings is translated sorrow in the KJV and pain or painful toil in the NIV. It's used only three times. Two of those are in Genesis 3:16-17, verses that outline the consequences of their decisions.

To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."

To Adam he said, "Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, 'You must not eat of it,' "Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life."

The only other time it's used is in Genesis 5:29 where it describes how the Lord would bring relief from these feelings.

He named him Noah and said, "He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the LORD has cursed."

Lamech named his son Noah, which means comfort. But how did Noah bring the world comfort from the curse? Well, one way was that he preserved the purity of the Messianic line, avoiding the attack on humanity that produced the Nephilim and contaminated the human gene pool. This made the coming of the One who really would give us comfort possible.

But I believe Lamech also knew that Noah was to be the last of the 10 Patriarchs from the time before the Great Flood, and because he named his son Noah, their 10 names could be formed into a single sentence that summarizes the complete Gospel story. "Man (Adam) is appointed (Seth) mortal (Enosh) sorrow (Kenan), but the blessed God (Mahalalel) shall come down (Jared) teaching (Enoch) that his death shall bring (Methusaleh) the despairing (Lamech) comfort (Noah)." It's a prophecy of the Messiah that took 10 generations to write, but it has brought much comfort to the world, because it had to have come from God. What kind of coincidence could have produced it otherwise?

But the most important point to remember is this. Adam and Eve learned that sorrow and painful toil came into their lives as the result of seeking independence from God.

Shared Responsibility

When I say the Lord let them share some of the responsibility, here's what I mean. Even though they had just made the second biggest mistake in the history of Man (the biggest was Israel's murder of their Messiah) and even though God could have made them disappear and started again with another handful of red dirt (Gen. 2:7), He still watched over them and cared for them as His children.

His first act of kindness after the fall was to provide food for them, even though they had to work for it. His second was to clothe them. His third was to send Cherubim to guard the way to the tree of Life, preserving their way back to the Garden once the consequences of their actions had been reversed at the cross (Romans 8:20-21).

In no way could Adam and Eve negate the outcome of their decision, but because of His great mercy they could learn from it and voluntarily yield their will back to the Lord who was still their Provider (El Shaddai). When they did, He blessed them with long life and many children, signs of His favor. And though their circumstances were forever changed, they again walked and talked with God and were at peace with Him in spite of those circumstances. In other words, even though they could no longer physically live in the Garden, they could achieve a Garden state of mind.

Lessons from History

The German philosopher Hegel once said, "The only thing we learn from history is that we learn nothing from history." But in Romans 15:4 Paul wrote that "everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures, we might have hope."

In other words, lessons that began in the Garden still apply today. We're to learn both from Adam and Eve's mistakes and the Lord's response.

Like Adam and Eve we're God's people. As long as we submit ourselves to His will our every need will be met and He will assume full responsibility for our well being (Psalm 37:4 & Matt. 6:31-33). But when we start exercising our own prerogatives He begins sharing that responsibility with us. The more independently we act, the more responsibility He shares. Along with shared responsibility come sorrow and painful toil.

When we surrender again He takes the responsibility back. Since He hasn't given us full use of the dimension of time, we can't go back and negate the consequences of our independent decisions, but like Adam and Eve we can learn from them and voluntarily yield our will again to the Lord who is still our Provider. All He requires is confession and a willingness to start over. His mercies are new every morning, so we too can achieve a Garden state of mind in spite of our circumstances, just like our first parents.

It's All in Your Mind

One day soon, the Lord will lead us all back to the real Garden, the one in heaven. But until then, there's the Garden state of mind. These are perilous times and every indication is that they'll become more so. If you're all stressed out about them, maybe you're assuming too much responsibility, trying to impose your own will on things you can't control instead of trusting God and living according to His will. If so, you're living outside the Garden, where it's full of sorrow and painful toil.

Jesus said, "Come to Me all you who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matt. 11:28)." Give your life to Him again, and relieve yourself of the responsibility. You may not be able to reverse the effects of your past decisions, but if you draw near to Him, He'll draw near to you and lead you safely through them. Just like Adam and Eve did, you'll find that life's better in the Garden, even when it's only a state of mind. Selah 07-19-08

Overcomers

Who Are The Overcomers? - A Bible Study by Jack Kelley – www.gracethrufaith.com

In this study, we're going to deal with a new definition that's coming into the Christian lexicon. The word being re-defined is overcomer and the new definition is that an overcomer is someone who lives a Christ-like life, as opposed to just talking about it. They have died to self and now live a life that's holy and blameless. Some who embrace this definition claim that only those who meet its requirements will be the Bride of Christ while all other believers will spend the millennium in the "outer darkness" learning the sanctification that they failed to learn on Earth, so they'll be ready for eternity when the 1000 years are over.

The fact that the Bible never uses the word in this context doesn't seem to be a problem for advocates of this new definition. It's like the word repent, which is never used in the Bible to describe a change in behavior, only a change in attitude. Because they've never been taught that, its intended meaning has never entered most peoples' minds. The common understanding of overcomer is facing the same future.

But to set the record straight, let's see just how the Bible does define an overcomer. The word overcome first appears in connection with believers in John 16:33

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Even though this world isn't a perfect place, we can have peace in our lives knowing that Jesus has overcome the world. No matter how bad life is for us here, in Christ we're assured of a better one to come. Jesus is the overcomer, and He told us this to encourage us. (Imagine how you'd feel about this word of encouragement if you arrived in Heaven only to discover that you had to complete a 1000 year indoctrination program before you were deemed worthy for the Kingdom.)

Paul said that we should overcome evil with good. (Romans 12:21) But while he admonished us over and over again to go beyond salvation and achieve victory over the sin nature in order to win the crowns available to us for doing so, he never once said that our participation in the kingdom depends on it. This is the only time he ever used the word relative to our behavior.

Of all the New Testament writers, John used the word most often, saying that those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God are overcomers.

I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:14)

Every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world. (1 John 4:3-4)

Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. (1 John 5:4-5)

We've overcome the evil one, the spirit of anti-Christ, and the world, and how did we do that? Through faith, by believing that Jesus is the Son of God. As is always the case, it's our faith that makes us appear holy and blameless not our behavior, which could never qualify us.

In Rev. 2-3 the word is used in each of the seven letters to churches to describe those who resist or reject the religious sin for which the church is being criticized and/or remain true to the gospel.

Overcomers In Ephesus

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken your first love. Remember the height from which you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God. (Rev. 2:4-5,7)

By the end of the first century the Church had already become so busy doing religious works that they had forgotten that the work was done and our primary purpose is to worship the Lord and give Him thanks. The relationship He gave His life to have with us was already becoming another religion. Those who changed their attitude and overcame the human tendency to earn our position with God, and rested in the fact that Jesus did it all would meet Him at the Tree of life in paradise. The overcomer was the one who rested in faith and worshiped God.

Overcomers In Smyrna

Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death. (Rev. 2:10)

The ten days referred to here are the reign of 10 Caesars, which lasted for 250 years, through the third Century. During this time Christians were persecuted relentlessly. Many were called upon to give their lives for their faith. The Lord offered no escape from this except that which comes from death. But those who remained faithful in believing His promise of everlasting life, received it. The overcomer died in faith and received life.

Overcomers In Pergamum

Nevertheless, I have a few things against you: You have people there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating food sacrificed to idols and by committing sexual immorality. Likewise you also have those who hold to the teaching of the Nicolaitans. Repent therefore! Otherwise, I will soon come to you and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it. (Rev. 2:14-17)

In the 4th Century the church was married to the pagan Babylonian religion, and practices that were not only un-Biblical but detestable to the Lord became common. The Lord threatened to fight these practices with the sword of His Mouth, which is his Word. The overcomers were those who stayed true to the unadulterated Gospel and lived by faith in its promises. They received the Bread of Life, and a token that would commend them to the Father in the name of the Son.

Overcomers In Thyatira

Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols. I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds. Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan's so-called deep secrets (I will not impose any other burden on you): Only hold on to what you have until I come. To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations. (Rev. 2:20-26)

The illicit marriage of the Church to Babylon produced four children, all alive on Earth today. Thyatira represents the Catholic Church, the first child. It became wealthy by confiscating property through false accusation, like Jezebel had, and also instituted the sale of indulgences that authorized licentious practices for a fee. But to those who hold Jesus in their hearts and reject the traditions that would add to what He accomplished on the cross, Jesus promises salvation. They haven't learned Satan's secrets of Jesus plus Mary, Grace plus works, Scripture plus sacraments, and have overcome, living by faith alone.

Overcomers In Sardis

Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your deeds complete in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; obey it, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you. Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels. (Rev. 3:2-5)

The Protestant Church, represented by Sardis, carried out the Lord's threat to judge the Church's practices by the Sword of His Mouth. The call of the reformation was "Sola fides (only through faith), sola gratia (Only by grace), solus Christus (only with Christ), and sola Scriptura (Only His Word)." For the first time, the Bible was available to all who could read it. Great seminaries were founded to teach pastors the Word of God. But into these seminaries the devil crept, and the authority of God's word was challenged. It was all in the name of intellectualism so it was thought to be good, but soon the Gospel had been robbed of its power, the light of faith had gone out, the Spirit was quenched, and the people had been lulled to sleep.

Many still are asleep, but there are a few who remember the Gospel and cling to it. They've repented of the Documentary Hypothesis, Modern Rationalism, and all the rest. They've overcome what Walter Martin called the Cult of Liberalism and have retained the power of the Gospel. They've been washed in the Blood of the Lamb and been given clean clothes. Their names have been written in the Lamb's Book of Life, and He will never blot them out.

Overcomers In Philadelphia

I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. (Rev. 3:8,10-12)

"Hold on to what you have," the Lord commands the Evangelical Church, "because I'm coming soon. And because you've waited patiently for me, I'll keep you from the hour of trial that's going to test the whole world."

And what do we have to hold on to? We have His Word, His name, and His promise. He's coming soon. There are 5 crowns mentioned in the New Testament, to which believers should aspire. But here the Lord mentioned only one. Which one? I think it's the one described in 2 Tim. 4:8, the Crown of Righteousness, for those who've longed for His appearance. Who but the Bible believing, prophecy studying Evangelical Church can even qualify for this crown, and which one is more descriptive of the yearning in our hearts?

Overcomers In Laodicea

I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne. (Rev. 3:15-16-20-21).

Here's the fourth child, the End Times Apostate Church. Prosperous and in need of nothing. They like to call themselves followers of Christ, not just believers, and the focus is definitely on doing. Hardly anyone hears His knock on the door, which means He's standing outside trying to get in. To those who overcome this mad rush to conquer a world beyond saving, in the name of a Jesus many of them don't know, in the hope of accomplishing something He doesn't want, to those who hear the knock and invite Him into their heart to kindle the fires of faith, He will give the right to sit with Him on his throne.

These seven letters give us seven examples to show that we overcome by faith alone. From the church in Ephesus we see that we overcome by worshiping the Lord and thanking Him for doing all the work of our salvation. From Smyrna we learn that it's by remaining faithful to the point of death that we overcome and receive life. The overcomers in Pergamum rejected the pagan rituals of Babylon that obscure and pervert the Gospel Story. Those in Thyatira refused to add to the simplicity of gospel, while in Sardis they refused to let its power be taken away. Overcomers in Philadelphia hold on to His Name, His Word and His Promise, and Laodicean overcomers are admonished to listen for His knock at the door, and open their hearts to Him when they hear it.

While it's God's will that we be conformed to the image of Christ in our behavior, and that we go beyond salvation to achieve victory, it's clear from Scripture that we overcome by clinging tenaciously to our child-like faith in the Lord's completed work on the cross. The seven churches were just that, churches. Yet for the most part they introduced gospel obscuring, faith destroying doctrines that over the generations have kept untold millions off the path to eternal life. Only those who overcome by faith survive.

He said to me: "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To him who is thirsty I will give to drink without cost from the spring of the water of life. He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. (Rev. 21:6-7)

The Book of Revelation ends as it began, by telling us that eternal life is provided without cost to those who walk by faith in Him alone, believing that the work is done, that the Lord is the beginning and the end of their quest for eternity. These are the overcomers.

"EKSTASIS WORSHIP - What Is It?"

Caleb Brundidge: "EKSTASIS WORSHIP - What Is It?"

A New Level of Worship

The Lord has revealed that many in this hour who will worship Him will actually be taken into His ecstasy. These ones will find themselves lost in His wonderment, amazed by Him and His miracles, going into places in worship they have never been before. Due to their newly found freedom in Jesus, some of these individuals will be freed from the prison of their souls as they experience this new level of worship - Ekstasis Worship.

The Definition of Ekstasis

Many people have asked me questions about Ekstasis Worship. In this article, I will share what it means and how to move into this new level of worship in your own life.

The word ekstasis is a Greek word; in our English, we would say ecstasy.

Ekstasis - Greek word for:

• trance

• moving beyond oneself

• finding freedom from the perceived constraint of time and space

• being in a state of amazement

• being astonished by

• being of one mind, beside one's self - insane

• throwing of the mind out of a normal state

Let's look at a few terms often used when speaking of Ekstasis:

• amazement

• a feeling of great surprise or wonder

• astonishment, shock, speechlessness, awe, wonder and wonderment

• ecstasy

• an overwhelming feeling of great happiness or joyful excitement

• chiefly archaic, an emotional or religious frenzy or trancelike state, originally one involving an experience of mystic self-transcendence

• rapture

• a feeling of intense pleasure or joy

• the transporting of Believers to Heaven at the second coming of Christ; rapture is a way of being transported

I know you may be saying, "What?"

But listen to what we say sometimes: "I want to be raptured with God." Now feel that...Where are you going? What are you feeling? Are you seeing yourself rising up? Are you feeling intense joy? Are you moving beyond yourself? This is Ekstasis. Ecstasy.

Happiness is one thing; bliss is another, suggesting a state of utter joy and contentment. Ecstasy is even more extreme, describing a trancelike state in which one loses awareness of one's surroundings.

Although rapture originally referred to being raised or lifted out of oneself by divine power, nowadays it is used in much the same sense as ecstasy to describe an elevated sensation of bliss. Transport applies to any powerful emotion by which one is carried away (i.e., a transport of delight).

When happiness is carried to an extreme or crosses over into mania, it is called euphoria. Euphoria may outwardly resemble ecstasy or rapture, but upon closer examination, it is usually found to be exaggerated and out of proportion.

Now you have a definition of Ekstasis.

True Joy

How many times have you felt the intense joy of God - "The Joy of the Lord is my Strength"? There is fullness of joy in His presence.

Now, can you imagine this intense emotion of joy? Some emotions, like this one, make us want to move, dance and jump up and down. Now add music - a beat. Keep thinking about His joy - your strength. Now the joy is more than you can contain! You begin to move outside of your normal state of mind. You are in the presence of the Lord. His Word says to praise Him in the dance. Dance = joy. When we begin to praise Jesus, He comes and inhabits our praise. We can then go places with "Daddy."

This joy doesn't have to come from any certain style of music. Worship is not a genre of music. Throughout history in Christianity, worship has been considered by most Christians to be the central act of Christian identity, as the personal act of lifting one's mind and heart to God.

I was talking to a friend the other day about the words she wrote for a song. I asked her what kind of music was right for the song. She said to me, "You know, normal worship music." I then said, "What is normal worship music?" I continued, "I am a black man, and what I call normal is not normal to you, because you and I are from different cultures. Different cultures and races of people have different styles of music."

What I am saying is that it is not the style of music that puts you in the ekstasis of God. It is your relationship with Jesus. Also, worship is not just music. Music is only a part of worship; worship is a lifestyle of adoration of the King of Glory. Worship is to adore Him.

Astonishment & Amazement

Let's look at the words astonishment and amazement. As I was researching the word ekstasis in the Greek lexicon, these two words came up as ekstasis. Here are a couple of Scriptures that in the Greek used the word ekstasis.

Mark 5:42: "And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment."

Luke 5:26: "And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, 'We have seen strange things to day.'"

These words, astonishment and amazed, are ekstasis in the Greek, and, as we said earlier, mean: feeling of great surprise or wonder; astonishment, shock, speechlessness, awe, wonder and wonderment.

In these Scriptures, the people were in ekstasis (ecstasy) over a miracle of God. This is one expression of ekstasis. This is the first area of Ekstasis Worship I want to achieve in a worship service.

Trances

The next definition of ekstasis is when it is used to describe a trance.

Acts 10:10-11: "He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. He saw Heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to Earth by its four corners."

Acts 11:5: "I was in the city of Joppa praying, and in a trance I saw a vision. I saw something like a large sheet being let down from Heaven by its four corners, and it came down to where I was."

Here the word trance is also ekstasis in the Greek. We see ekstasis being used in the definition of moving beyond oneself. Here is, I believe, a state of being in the presence of God. I see this happening as people are praising God in the dance. Psalm 150 says to praise Him in the dance. The psalms say He inhabits the praises of His people. The sheet comes down and He comes and sits in your praise dance.

Freedom!

I have one more characterization of the word ekstasis that I really like. The Greek lexicon gave reference to lutron, which means:

• the price for redeeming

• ransom paid for slaves and captives, for the ransom of life

• to liberate many from misery and the penalty of their sins

In looking at the definition of ekstasis, it also said:

• Freedom

• Find freedom from the perceived constraint of time and space

I thought about my own life and how God brought me into freedom. Freedom from my own prison of drugs, freedom from homosexuality, WOW! Right now I am going into His ekstasis - freedom from a man-pleasing spirit. Wow! Oh, more of His ecstasy is coming over me now - the freedom to tell the world about His glory. I am in amazement just thinking about His freedom and how He paid for my lutron. It puts me in a state of ecstasy!

Your Assignment

Here is an assignment for you! This next week, begin to look for the ekstasis of God in your life.

• How many times in your week does the amazement of God happen for you?

• How often do you find yourself in extreme joy?

• How often do you feel like dancing and rejoicing in His presence?

• How many times in this week does God just "blow your mind"?

Choose to release some extreme praise this week. See how He comes and sits in your presence and takes you into the joy of His presence.

Scripture Meditation

Week One: Psalm 149:1-5 (The Message):

"Hallelujah! Sing to GOD a brand-new song,

praise Him in the company of all who love Him.

Let all Israel celebrate their Sovereign Creator,

Zion's children exult in their King.

Let them praise His name in dance;

strike up the band and make great music!

And why? Because GOD delights in His people,

festoons plain folk with salvation garlands!

Let true lovers break out in praise,

sing out from wherever they're sitting,

Shout the high praises of God."

Week Two: Luke 5:22-26 (New King James Version):

"But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, He answered and said to them, 'Why are you reasoning in your hearts? Which is easier, to say, "Your sins are forgiven you," or to say, "Rise up and walk"? But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on earth to forgive sins' - He said to the man who was paralyzed, 'I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house.' Immediately he rose up before them, took up what he had been lying on, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God and were filled with fear, saying, 'We have seen strange things today!'"

Week Three: Acts 11:5-8 (New King James Version):

"I was in the city of Joppa praying; and in a trance I saw a vision, an object descending like a great sheet, let down from Heaven by four corners; and it came to me. When I observed it intently and considered, I saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild beasts, creeping things, and birds of the air. And I heard a voice saying to me, 'Rise, Peter; kill and eat.' But I said, 'Not so, Lord! For nothing common or unclean has at any time entered my mouth.'"

Week Four: 2 Samuel 6:14-15 (New Living Translation):

"And David danced before the LORD with all his might, wearing a priestly garment. So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the LORD with shouts of joy and the blowing of rams' horns."
